Class of 1998:
Trevor Easton is a local micro-brewer and entrepreneur.  He attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he majored in Industrial Engineering.  When he graduated, he worked as a Lean Engineer for the Red Cross (an engineering discipline aimed at increasing the efficiency of engineering processes), both in Madison and Chicago.  With an MBA from DePaul University, he came back to Madison to start a business focused on the production of a non-traditional product, namely gluten-free beer.  This idea arose out of his wife’s diagnosis with celiac disease, and sells to an ever-increasing number of customers who prefer gluten-free products. His business is called the ALT brewery, currently at 16-barrel capacity, and his beer has recently captured the attention of beer aficionados, illustrated by a recent silver medal award at the Great American Beer Festival.

Class of 1984:
David Mooney is a BioEngineering Professor at the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University.  He graduated with a BS from the University of Wisconsin in 1987, and a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1992.  He studies how cells in our bodies communicate with their environment.  He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, and the National Academy of Medicine.  He leads a group that is developing new materials and delivery mechanisms for stem cell-based, regenerative therapeutics and immunotherapies against cancer.  For example, he recently showed how to encapsulate injected stem cells and provide them with a raft of growth and anti-inflammatory factors so that they survive and proliferate (published in Nature). His team has also created the first biomaterial-based, therapeutic cancer vaccine, currently in a clinical trial for melanoma.
